A Historical Sketch
In the fall of 1963, a group of seven young men were summoned to the room of Don Defino in Walker Hall for the purpose of discussing the organization of a second men’s group on the Lee College campus. Those present included: Paul Conn, Steve Conn, Don Defino, Marvin Hadsall, Charles Hollifield, Dave Partin, and Gene Pharr. The group of men met again several evenings later with Dr. Delton Alford to prepare a petition to the school administration requesting the approval of their newly formed organization. In addition to Dr. Alford, the men sought counsel from Dr. Charles W. Conn who at the time was, among other things, a member of the Executive Committee of the Church of God. Under the advice of Dr. Alford, the group enthusiastically approved Dr. Donald Bowdle to serve as co-sponsor. Dr. Bowdle gave academic and spiritual clout that accelerated the acceptance of this group. The first official preliminary meeting of the organization was with Dr. Bowdle and several more men who had been previously sought out and approved. The selection of the name was the first order of business in this first official meeting. Alpha Gamma Chi was selected unanimously, and two "Grey Papers" were presented to the college officially establishing the organization. |
